Who should be the starting Point Guard for the Brooklyn Nets?

I am sure Nets fans are well aware but to the rest of the league meet…Spencer Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie has been with the Nets since 2016 and has done nothing but gradually elevate his game each season. This year the 26 year-old point guard is set to take his game to the next level and has not disappointed. In the games Spencer has started he is 6-2, and unlike Dion Waiters the only thing high here is Spencers’ career averages. He is currently averaging 20pts 2.6rbs 5.9asts 41% FGs 31% 3P. The only thing preventing Dinwiddie from reaching his potential is his teammate…Kyrie Irving.

Spencer Dinwiddie may argue he has been more effective than Kyrie Irving at running Brooklyn’s offense. Dinwiddie has an offensive rating of 114 when on the court and 101 while off the court, while Irving has an offensive rating of 112.9 on the court and a 106.9 while off the court. Offensive rating is a stat analytics nerds use to estimate the amount of points produced by the team per 100 possessions while a player is on the court. The Nets are -9.8 in assists % while Kyrie is playing, while they are at -5.1 in assists % while Dinwiddie is on the floor.  These are some deciding factors when choosing your franchise point guard of the future.

Kyrie Irving is averaging 28.5pts 5.4rbs 7.2asts. Although there is no doubt that Kyrie Irving is a Superior talent to Spencer Dinwiddie, is it bizarre to think Dinwiddie deserves the starting spot? For these two to coexist Dinwiddie would need to be comfortable with a “Lou Williams” type role. This could be a possibility as Spencer has come off the bench his entire career, but Spencer maybe looking for the same thing as rest of us are…a promotion. Perhaps patience is needed and we should wait until Kevin Durant returns to witness Brooklyn in its final form. But by the unfortunate chance that Durant does not return to his elite level, will the Brooklyn Nets regret trading D’Angelo Russell in an effort at accelerating “The Process” ?
